one more honey slides review. uk edition.
7inch with 2 songs of bluesy, garage punk by Weird Party from Houston, Texas. Band members playing under pseudonyms include Keg Noisily and Buggy Rickshaw. Ex-Fatal Flying Guilloteens amongst others and this is not dissimilar. Honey Slides on the A side starts with a big drumbeat and there’s a hefty bassline going through it recalling The Jesus Lizard and Fatal Flying Guilloteens themselves. Shawn Adolph, or Rowland Blackout as he’s known in Weird Party, spits the vocals out over discordant guitars. The pounding rhythms continue on side B as Sarah Palin gets a dressing down in the song of the same name – bit of a singalong chorus here and they’re not happy with Sarah Palin - “Her eyes are filled with terror, baby/It smells like the stench of a dead cow”. This lot don’t mess about - angry and right in your face on both tracks. Decent 7inch, I expect they put on a pretty raucous live show.

Another Honey Slides 7” Review
from Yellowgreenred:
Elliot Smith’s happier younger brother adorns the cover of this Weird Party single on the newly inaugurated Sex & Death label. “Honey Slides” doesn’t sound like that guy looks, though – this track has kind of an “elder statesmen of modern garage” vibe, like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Dirtbombs or Reigning Sound setlist. Nearly reaches hardcore speed for the chorus – definitely a bit more aggro than I had anticipated. Titling a song “Sarah Palin” is kind of asking for instant dated-ness, but how many songs written these days are timeless classics anyway? It definitely sounds like they wrote it after a full day of CNN on the couch, disgusted and confused and needing to impart those feelings to the world. The snotty-but-melodic hook calls to mind a slicker Whatever Brains, and is probably more suited for the a-side position than “Honey Slides” (if side placement was still a significant concern in 2012). It’s pretty easy to tell which groups know how to play rock n’ roll, and which are just trying to figure it out or fake their way through, and Weird Party are clearly the former. I’m interested to see what both band and label do next.

GET BENT!: Review: Weird Party - Honey Slides 7''
Relentless, raw and ferocious are 3 words that could easily sum up Weird Party. This Houston quintet play an unbridled style of punk that I haven’t heard since The Jesus Lizardwas tearing shit up. “Honey Slides”, the A-side off the 7”, starts with a build-up that makes you feel like you’re in store for an ass kicking, and Weird Party no doubt deliver on that front. Light scratches of the guitar turn to a match up of the banging basslines until singer Shawn Adolph brings it to full swing with a shout like he’d been stabbed in the foot.
The B-side “Sarah Palin” doesn’t let up. If anything, it’s the winner of the two tracks. Former Sugar Shack guitarist, Kyle Gionis, kicks it off with a little blues-punk twang until the whole thing hits like a kick in the crotch. The rhythm section pounds like a guy with the woman of his dreams. The guitar lines are piercing, like a saw blade ran across a fence, but they still manage to sync up with Adolph’s shriek. Listening to this, I couldn’t help but think how fitting these tracks could fit into a horror movie scene, in which the killer is driving to a secluded area in the woods while his victim is tied up and gagged in the trunk, frantically trying to escape.

BOAWS: Weird Party - Honey Slides 7''
Yep, you folks get another one from Texas this week, this time from the Houston area in the form of the debut single from Weird Party out on Sex & Death Records. Containing former members of Fatal Flying Guilloteens and Sugar Shack, I’ve seen them described as some sort of super group. I don’t know about that, but I sure as shit loved me some Fatal Flying Guilloteens, so knowing that certainly raised my interest some. I think I may have a Sugar Shack album somewhere too, but I honestly can’t remember a whole lot about it, sorry guys. But moving on, Weird Party bring a bit of straight up punk ‘n roll with the two cuts featured here that’s vaguely reminiscent of the earlier FFG material. But all in all this stays within the garagy punk roots that some of these guys have found themselves in and out of in the past. However, the overall vibe on this is more supercilious and one that especially comes through on the b-side “Sarah Palin”, not that I’m opposed to that in any way. Two solid enough tracks to be found, and ones that leave me holding out hope that they can hold it together long enough for an LP. We’ll see.
